"How can we be so arrogant? The planet is,was and always will be stronger than us. We can't destroy it; if we overstep the mark, the planet will simply erase us from its surface and carry on existing. Why don't we start talking about not letting the planet destroy us? Because "Saving Our Planet" gives us a sense of power, action and nobility whereas "Not Letting The Planet Destroy Us " might lead to feelings of despair and impotence and to a realisation of just how very limited our capabilities are!!"
so muses Hamid in Paulo Coelho's " The Winner Stands Alone"
Yes!! NOT LETTING THE PLANET DESTROY US. It sure is a a line of thought to ponder upon.
We look up to the sky thinking..."Sky is the Limit.".There we see a cloudless sky and wonder where the profuse clouds laden with sparkling droplets are?! Raindrops- they fall on the streets deprived of green, only to go down the drain to join the vast blue sea, whose envious color is being eaten away by the garbage on which the drops make their journey whilst in those drains. The sea with its waves and tides pulled in and out by the waltzing moon. Wait a minute! and then we realize with a start 'OH!NO.The waves are missing too."We gaze at a silent sea wishing we had an in-built system to drain all those stray thoughts which are miles away from the glitz and glamour of modern life to the endless, now wave less sea..What pleasure it would have given us to see those stray thoughts being tossed and thrashed by those waves. But ALAS! The waves are gone. But where? May be, they were pulled into another world , through a warp in time , down a rabbit hole with no "Thuds" of any prophetic end. A gaping hole to another world..That is what we are wishing for. Another world to plunge in. Yet another world waiting with its forests and brooks, where we can build our fly-overs,sky-scrapers..and aqua-theaters..The prospect of continued existence in ANOTHER WORLD.. That's what we are hoping for. A hole to open up and transport us.That is what is stopping us from acting, even as we see death inching closer by the second.
And so we seek refuge in Shakespeare's words and rest our thoughts in peace...
."So shalt thou feed on death that feeds on man,
And death, once dead, there's no more dying then."
I totally agree with u, Aparna. Helplessness is overwhelming me.My influence to save earth ends with the four walls of my compound. How can i point my finger at the world when even i'm not successful in being ecofriendly. This very keys i'm touching to express my pain over Our mother's fate itself is contributing in worsening it.But i feel so devastated to see the authorities eagerness to cut down the very last few majestic trees that roof the road from Vanchiyoor to Pattoor. I wonder where these people live. Don't they have eyes to see that cutting trees have Stripped Kerala of its pride. Is their education too high to realize that Our ruthlessness have gifted us drought. The people of my locality have protested through phone calls.I hope this would stop them from cutting trees to widen the roads.Hope they would realize This road of their's leads to doom.I continue to stand on my terrace wondering how can i get the influence and power to stop them from slaughtering my friends. Each tree they cut is a day of richness subtracted from our lives.
ReplyDeleteSo we should act.
yeahh....i try 2 engage ppl 2 thnk bout it....2 debate bout d pros nd cons...bt nt a sngle soul intrstd.....dey talk volumes bout saving planet nd makin earth a bttr place...bt 2 make it bttr ..v hve 2 clean it off us-d so-called superior race....!! i was shocked, wen i saw d news of felling trees @ vanchiyoor..d numerous tyms i walkd tat way back home...d trees prtctin me frm wrath of sun...d leaves fallinn downn as wind shifts coursee,,.rmndin me of d scenes on screenn...to b xact..it has hppndd all d while...bt never in tis vast a scale....nd talkin bout d education dey gve...dnt all schools teach chldrn 2 b eco-friendly,to swtch off fans nd lights nd nt 2 burn garbage nd hvnt v all seen d xact oppste of der teachings beinggg carried out in d school premises......its high tym v realise ...d ground beneath us is slippin awayy......its NOW or NEVER........der r no submarines 2 get us alive outta d final verdict of nature..v smplyy gtta MEND WAT V DID!!
DeleteI like what you said about your influence to save earth ends with the four walls of your compound..True dat..But "We should act?"..I don't think us acting is the issue...Wake up its not about us..And lets stop believing no matter how badly we mess up the planet we can always fix it.
DeleteAre you inspired by people who say we should do our part no matter the odds?..Well delaying the inevitable is all we do..But being eco friendly is a good thing..Don't mistake me!:D
Do you know why Einstein was a genius?..Its just amazing how he without ever being so eco-friendly gifted humanity more than anyone before..Read on him..
I don't know how to say it in a way that I don't appear to be a pessimistic earth hater :D..But sometimes we need to do something more than this..Blogs, Letters to the editors, Articles get applauds..Nothing more..:)..Think about it.
"us acting" ..sure is the issue....UNLESS we stop our destructive acts..... How else do we re-store the balance,we,so skilfully destroyed..?
DeleteWe are not the pplWHO GET inspired by others who believe in theMIGHTY DIFFERENCE a SMALL ACT OF their's can make..but, WE ARE the people who are saying that we should act no matter the odds
and Einstein.. yes, he was a genius who contibuted a lot .....without so-called eco friendly slogans... but we unfortunately do not live in his time....as Brown says....THE PROMISES OF SCIENCE HASNOT BEEN KEPT.PROMISES OF EFFICEIENCY AD SIMPLICITY Have bred nothing but pollution and chaos.......for world is always ready to recieve talent with open-arms...very often it does not know what to do with the genuis...what happeed to galileo for sayin earth goesround the sunn..... the same is happening to people who are trying to state the fact on the consequences our actions breed on mother earth,,..... and yea.. we are well aware that ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS..and are supplementing our words with actions...
Ah you've gotten me wrong miss Aparna..I wasn't saying we shouldn't be eco-friendly..Ofcourse we should be..Let's get that over with..I'm not a psychopathic earth hater k?:D..What i'm saying is I don't see the point of this blog..It doesn't teach me anything i don't know..Sure having ur opinions stated in a website is the trend nowadays..Pretty cool with teenagers(Using punctuation would be really helpful though:P)..Hey nobody's shunning our opinions..Actually Eco friendly mind sets are increasingly appreciated..Galileo was shunned.Big difference:)..Anyways i'm all game for a debate but just FYI we're on the same side of the coin, trying to push each other off..:D..So before you completely shun my opinions(pun intended)..Think bout it..Hundreds of thousands of websites, books, blogs speak the same thing..Still i don't see us even providing friction to the steamrolling collapse of our ecology..
Deletejust think bout it "my-dear-not-anywhere-near-psycopathic-earth-hater" (no pun intended :P) true that hundreds of tousands of websites are speaking on the same thing.....you think they have no better job? you think all they want are the so-called appreciating comments and applause?..... you think they are like the nightingale who was awed by shouts of "ENCORE"??...well then...you are wrong there,,...for every example of a SO-CALLED eco-friendly/go-green booster blog/page/article.. i can show you , a minimum of three comments that go by your lines...... people who really think they cant clear the mess which they created in the first place ..without any hint of doubt on their wrecking expertise.. btw i was not trying to push your opinions off...i wassimply reciprocating what you did in your first comment.. the fact that ppl bother to read and spend some time...though it be to post a criticism on our articles... sure shows we are doing something,...... which is better than the "WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO?" slogan ....... and if you failed to notice....long gone are the days when starting an eco-friendly blog was considered a trend.......we have moved far from that era..... and if you see ppl sticking on to this quite-so-old trend.... you shld knw there is smtng.... that you failedto see in their efforts.... with due respect for your opinion...none of the things i said....was for argument-sake... and i really hope , you are happy with the punctuation marks i have peppered my reply with.. :p
Deletewhat the hell are we up 2 make in the name of development??? after the so called development at tampanoor-overbridge road people are just running in that road 2 save themselves frm sun. anyway i liked the old green tampanoor more.... and the funniest thing abt road developmnt in kerala is tht they cover the entire road in tar +cover the footpath in tiles which would immediately be terminated at the sides by walls or buildings.the earth cannot be seen. no trees planted to cope up the cut down ones and even if it is done they are not taken care of.....and what a contradiction! The rivers in industrial countries are cleaner than in our god,s own country....
ReplyDeletexactlyy.. it's high time we realise that the word development means improvement not just in sheer numbers , but in quality too... HoW can anyone , whether it be the MNC's , nationals or the government silently giving its nod to every other so-called development projects justify this reckless behavior.... what use would these multi-tiled and paved roads serve if there are no pedestrians left to walk on them? ridiculous! thats one word among many others which i see befitting allthe development projects.. we are heading for our DOOM.. and the funny thing is ...we are accepting it without even a hint of resistance..
