" You people heard? The kid in 14B .He won some contest and got 50 grand! "
"Isn't he , the one with PS4?"
"You mean the one with GALAXY GRAND ??"
"Oh ! The guy with the goatee !I heard he traded his Grand for iPHONE 5 "
"YEP! He is the one and guess wha t?! He got invited to Fergusson's RETIREMENT PARTY!!
"WHOA ! MAN!" , they exclaimed in unison.
And there I sat, my head spinning around GALAXY GRAND's, PS4's and TABS! I couldn't help but push my jaws back to its place from where it had fallen . I sat staring at them, people 4 or may be 5 years younger than me, talking about the kid next door. I was FLABBERGASTED.
My thoughts skipped back to those days when the news of a peer winning a contest or scholarship was greeted with the unfortunate news-bringer getting bombarded with questions like.. "Who? Amala's sister?" "You mean the girl with those long pig tails? "The one who played badminton with us the other day?"
Back then, we never knew or even bothered about the brandname of the capri she wore or whether she had a limited edition of IRON MAN-3 watch!!
Those were days when the mention of a kid next door had us happily reciting his/her daily routine. Every Dick, Harry and Tom around the corner were kids with whom we have shared a tea or paav-bhaji at least once.
Today , children barely know their next-door neighbor! They can answer any question on the phone he has or the cafe he frequents, but not his name! They have seen him alright and of course they are facebook friends, anything they want to share is WhatsAPE-ed!(See ,What I just did there?!) But once they meet, they don't pat each other on the back or give a friendly punch on the stomach . There are no exchanges of "Hey pal' or "Heya bro" .They don't talk about the latest match , simply because they don't know whose side the other one is on! They haven't flown high, drunk with the pleasures of SUNDAY MATCHES and SATURDAY HANG-OUTS in the nearest coffee shop. They have never known the pleasure of pointing to a scar on their BFF's shoulder with a shout of "SEE THAT ONE THERE! HE GOT THAT FOR TRYING TO SAVE MY GOAL!". Now all they can point to is the scratch on their friend's XPERIA Z !
Well!! With this rapidly increasing addiction to gadgets, one need not be surprised to attend marriage between their facebook friend and his beloved Black-Berry!! As for GEN X gadgets define their lives, from womb to tomb!

What's wrong with a PS4?..Kidding..I see what you're talking about..
ReplyDeleteNo need to raise a storm over it..New generations bring along their new ideas and have fun in their own way...
Doesn't mean they're as bad as you make them out to be.
Besides you're a teenager as well..
BTW I'm pretty sure you have no idea how it was to be a teenager in the 80s or 90s..
Your childhood is now..:)
Anyways back on topic...I see what you mean..Lack of social contact(apart from social networking sites) sometimes smack you right in the face..
But that doesn't mean having fun in an traditional manner for the sake of it is the right pill..
I don't even know if a solution is required for life as we know it strange..You barely know about electricity a couple of centuries ago and BANG! IPADS!PS4s!XBOX! and NUTELLA!!(i don't know why i said that:P )...
Point being every generation thinks their childhood was more awesome than any other..
Criticize the previous gen. for traditionalism and cliched lifestyle and complain bout the life style of the next...Happens all the time..:)
well.... I wasnot complaining.. I was simply stupefied at the rate in which we are getting alienated from our siblings.... not to mention GEN X .. looking back.. we see... when we took ages to graduate from the bullock cart age with space age.. it took us barely minutes to switch from our basemodel nokia to xperia z.................... nah.. there is nothing wrong with a ps4.. but when life is all but a game , every day a task..... where fellow beings are but monsters to be bombed by the supposed hero...... i wonder... ain't life becoming a bit too MECHANICAL.......aren't we missing simple pleasures.....
ReplyDeleteWell to be quite frank, I guess we're missing the simple pleasures of life in a way. Point conceded:). But the point I'm trying to get across is that every generation does things in their own way. Things which years down make them say "Yup we started that trend, didnt we guys?:)"..So naturally they feel much more comfortable with that particular lifestyle and feel that's way every generation must do things...So let people do things their way righ?..Imagine how it'd be if we still did the same shit everyone did 50 years back? What would the purpose of life be?Creativity alas is the name of game right?..And your 'cart age to space age' example is on shaky grounds, dear. Acceleration will always bound to happen..Take population growth for example. Our population seems to increase with greater and greater speed as the centuries go on. The primary reason for this is simple -- each increase in population creates more people able to reproduce. So it should come as no surprise that in the 100 years between 1900 and 2000, the world's population quadrupled, topping six billion. See acceleration!!..Voila! Physics:)..Don't worry about alienation and stuff..Let things flow, girl..Humans will find ways to co exist in harmony and still be able to spend quality time with their siblings in innovative yet wonderful ways..:)..Don't be so negative..Life's beautiful..we'll survive..:)
ReplyDeleteYEAH... "Every generation does things their own way" ..Well that's the whole point of my article too...SO, You don't have to nail it into my head......... You just substantiated my "cart-age to space age" with a worthy example(sparing me the statistics which a lot of people take in without any questions) ..... and I just wonder what was that whole " on shaky grounds" accusation or innocent observation(whatever-it-was-) all about???????................. Creativity sure is the name of the game.. But alas! We are not playing it right... I am not worried about alienation (may be ..a little ) .. and Well, dear boy !, There,...your line"Humans WILL find ways ........." suggest that they haven't mastered this art of co-existence and connecting through innovative ways yet...and thaT's what I was concerned about... I am not suggesting a go-back to cave-man age .....I am not that naive! nor am I paranoid or negative...well .... with passage of time , I felt these magnificent products of technology and innovation taking away much of the space and time of my life, sealing many a relations with a facebook like or share and that was not a good change .... I see the beauty in life,,..that's exactly why I was and am concerned in the first place ..and yeahh ...WE'LL SURVIVE...HMMM ...at the end of the day i would rather prefer saying" I LIVED MY LIFE.TO THE FULLEST" ....than" OH..YEAH..I SCRAPED THROUGH....I MANAGED TO SURVIVE.."
